Don’t Overheat Your Baby

Some parents think that babies need to wear many extra layers of clothing to stay warm. This is not true. A general rule of thumb is to dress your infant in the same number of layers as you are wearing, plus one. It’s important to keep your baby warm but don’t get carried away. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns against overheating because of the increased risk of SIDS. In order to tell if your baby is warm enough, feel the back of his/her neck. If it’s cold, add a layer. If you feel sweat, remove a layer. It’s not a good idea to check the hands and feet of an infant because their circulation isn’t fully developed and the hands and feet may feel cold even though the body is warm. If your infant is premature, you may have to be more careful about the infant maintaining his/her body heat. You can always ask your pediatrician or healthcare provider what they think is right for your baby.

Pregnancy can be stressful. Some moms experience physical discomforts such as nausea, swelling, backache and fatigue. Hormonal changes cause emotional swings. Add that to concerns you might have over the economy, job security, etc. and you might experience stress overload. According to the March of Dimes, sustained stress can lead to premature births. That is why it’s so important for you to find ways to manage your stress. Suggestions for reducing stress include getting plenty of rest, moderate exercise, and eating a nutritious diet. Some mothers find yoga and massage to be helpful. Finding activities that are relaxing such as reading, listening to music, meditating can help to reduce stress. Find people to help you.
